Saturday was the final critique for photos entered in the Austin Shoot-Out, this weekend’s photojournalism competition. In which participants had 2 days to come up with one or two photos on the theme “Oh Texas my Texas.”
Saturday’s task was to get through as many of the entries as possible in 50 minutes, giving individual feedback and opening the floor for discussion on each, and then choosing a class favorite. That’s not a lot of time, so critiques were brief and selection went in 5 lightning elimination rounds.
I’ll start by saying my photo was knocked out in the first round, but the feedback I got was measured and helpful. While the rushed format was a little frustrating, it gave me a blunt and realistic assessment of where I needed to improve. Every reaction to a photo came from the gut, off the top of the head and out of the mouth with no time for refinement, not unlike how it happens in the real world. Great experience.
