Font Fanatic

By Caroline Fernandez

This morning I attended a session called “High Impact Design Type,” which used student and professional publications to teach you how to get the most out of fonts. Those who know me won’t be surprised to hear that for me, a font fanatic, the session was very exciting and worthwhile.

Ways you can get the maximum impact from fonts include:

-Varying fonts

-Font size

-Font color

-Position of font

-Leading

The session, presented by Ann Akers of Herff Jones and Laura Widmer of Iowa State University, was run well and easy to stay engaged in because of the visuals used on the screen. It was a great use of my time and I’m excited to bring back tips and tricks to The Pendulum.

Below are some of the main points with photos I took of the examples.

imageThe words Tahiti and Bungalows are in slab serif, a type of up and coming font. I love how the leading was changed and increased for the word Bungalows. The contrast of the boldness and leading are a great example and inspiration!

It is becoming more common to use bold and italic slab serifs. The above text was created by making three separate text boxes to get the words to have the unique overlap. The colors were also pulled from the picture, which ties the font and picture together.
