Who’s asking the questions?

By Tommy Hamzik

Postgame interviews can sometimes be the most stressful part of covering sports for me. That’s precisely why I was really excited to go to Joe Juliano’s session titled “Nailing Postgame Interviews.”

He spoke a lot about writing on deadline, which I have some experience on but not a ton. So that was helpful. The biggest thing he said that stuck out to me was that we’re writing for fans and readers. We’re asking some questions because the answers are what’s going to help draw people into reading our stories.

He emphasized that the worst thing young reporters do nowadays is start a question with “Talk About….” I couldn’t agree with him more and I’m glad he said that.
