Recruitment is a disappointment

By Jonathan Black

The final session I attended was about recruiting non-journalism majors, by Winston-Salem State’s L.D. Cobb.

This was the second session I attended recruitment, and while it was vastly more helpful than the first, that still isn’t saying a lot. I did come away with a couple of ideas, but I’m not sure if they would be able to come to fruition. Like an open pitch meeting where anyone can come and pitch a story idea.

What this session really taught me was that recruitment sessions in general are not very helpful. Every university has their own unique student body. As a result, no recruiting session will be the same.

I already know The Pendulum needs to look outside of journalism majors for some of our positions like web editor, business team and PR to name a few.  It will just be a matter of formulating and implementing new ideas when it is time to recruit new staff members.
