Photo illustrations: more than meets the eye (or lens)

By Kristen DeMaria

A chicken sandwich or two males kissing. As a Pendulum staff member, these are the first things that come to mind when I hear the words “photo illustration.”

Coming into a workshop about creating photo illustrations, I was prepared to learn how to more effectively shoot interesting and visually appealing illustrations. But something important that I learned today is that some photo illustrations are more about the post-production than the production itself.

The example in the workshop was how to represent a stressed out student. Sure, we can all go to Belk during exam week and find students freaking out on all three floors and snap a picture. But what about taking a normal portrait and manipulating it to look like that person is literally falling to pieces? Now that’s an idea.
