Five student leaders of The Pendulum, Elon University’s daily newsgathering organization, will attend the Associated Collegiate Press/College Media Association conference Oct. 31-Nov. 4, 2012, in Chicago, where they will attend educational workshops and network with media professionals.
Students in attendance will be:
- Rebecca Iannucci, A&E editor
- Katie Blunt, news editor
- Kyra Gemberling, design editor
- Al Drago, staff photographer
- Andrew Wilson, assistant sports editor
Pendulum adviser Colin Donohue will also be in attendance.
In addition to attending workshops and sessions led by professionals from the media world and faculty members from communications schools nationwide, students will also network, take tours of media organizations around the city and have The Pendulum professionally critiqued.
Students will submit entries to the ACP Best of Show awards competition, which recognizes the best newspapers, radio casts, newscasts, yearbooks and literary magazines from schools in attendance at the ACP/CMA convention. At the conference, ACP will hand out its individual awards and the prestigious Pacemakers during a ceremony on Saturday afternoon, which the students will attend. Students Claire Esparros, Sheryl Davis and Emily Haring have already received an honorable mention in the Multimedia Sports category for “Redshirts take unique path in world of college athletics.” The College Media Association will also recognize its Pinnacle Awards recipients. The Pendulum was named a finalist in five categories: Best TV Newscast (for “The Swing” production “Uncensored: Behind the Scenes of The Pendulum’s Nearly-Nude Photoshoot”), Best TV Entertainment Program (for the April 5, 2012 episode of “The Swing”), Best TV Promo/PSA/Station ID (for its recruitment video), Best Interactive Advertising and Media (for its Explore Elon advertising website) and Breaking News on the Web (for “Obama sparks discussion about rising college costs during UNC speech”).
